The location for Marmot Dark Mountains™ 2016 is the superb Northern Fells in the Lake District National Park with the Event Centre in Mungrisdale Village Hall.
"The Northern Fells are a great mountain marathon area that have hosted a number of events over the years" said race director, Shane Ohly, "They are guarded on their southern flank by the massive Blencathra and Skiddaw mountains but moving north they are typified by sweeping slopes that lend themselves to mountain running just fine! The ground is generally less rocky than the main Lake District area to the south and subsequently there are less crags and tarns, but there are plenty of technical features, intricate contour detail and route choice.

Above: Race Director, Shane Ohly, reveals the location of the 2016 Marmot Dark Mountains™ and further event information
He continued, "There has been snow at every Marmot Dark Mountains™ since we launched the event in 2013, and I am expecting the Northern Fells to provide a considerable challenge for all the participants. Certainly from a planning perspective we assume there will be significant snow on the ground and this impacts our course planning from the start".
A record field of 150 have already signed up for the January 2016 event with six different courses on offer. The Elite course offers the sternest test for the most experienced competitors with an optimum course distance of 52km with over 3,000m of ascent. Each of the linear courses, from Elite to C, gets progressively easier with less distance, less height gain and with larger, more obvious geographical features used as the checkpoint locations.
A comparison of all the courses since 2013 is shown in the table below. Remember that these are the planner's optimum route (i.e. not straight line distances).
|Elite||51.4km / 2,220m||55.5km / 2,635m||53.1km / 2,966m||52km / 3,200m|
|A||41.1km / 1,900m||44.4km / 1,940m||42.3km / 2,415m||42km / 2,500m|
|B||35.3km / 1,600m||41.4km / 1,785m||35.8km / 2,311m||38km / 2,100m|
|C||30.7km/ 1,400m||36.3km / 1,547m||33.9km / 1,770m||35km / 1,900m|
The Event Centre
The Event Centre is at Mungrisdale Village Hall. The address is:
Mungrisdale Village Hall
At this location there is plenty of room for us all and as in previous years we will be providing a 'silent area' for competitors to catch some sleep before travelling home. The Village Hall has been hired for our exclusive use and this is where registration, download and all the event administration will be situated. This is also where competitors can leave kit and mingle with their friends… it’ll be the hub of the event and manned constantly throughout the event. Breakfast will also be served here.
We have use of the building until 1600 on Sunday so there is plenty of time to get some sleep before travelling home – THIS IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Please read the Tiredness Kills PDF.
Please note, that under no circumstances are wet/muddy shoes & socks allowed into the main building. There will be an indoor area where these items can be removed and left.
Car parking for competitors will be along the road verge immediately south of Mungrisdale village (please approach from the A66 to the south). The car parking location is shown on the map above and this will be well signed from the A66. Please follow the event team's instructions as we must be considerate to local residents with our event parking.
