That Missing Control...
Yesterday, Race Director, Shane Ohly reported that one of the controls was missing (for the full story watch yesterday and today's videos). The original intention that Shane and Dave Taylor (Race Planner) had was to place this control on the summit of the knoll. However, the control description stated in error, “Knoll Foot, South Side” and Tim Budd, placed it correctly at this location. When Shane was controlling he failed to find it because he was certain that the location was Knoll Top and the area is sufficiently complex that the knoll sides are not visible from the tops. Also, the control descriptions are not printed on the all controls map (major learning point!) so Shane was unable to check the control description at the time (don’t worry – the control descriptions are printed on the individual course maps).
On reflection, we all felt that the original intended location was the appropriate one due to the complex nature of the ground being difficult to interpret accurately with the 1:40,000 map. So, the control has been moved to the top of the knoll and the control descriptions on the maps will be altered to reflect this.
We like to be open about this problem control because it is only through a process of double-checking that we know that every control location is as we intended, and as shown on the map.
